How to make a portrait photo square without cutting it off

· Replikhurt Tools

A 300 × 490 portrait is taller than a square. There are two common ways to make it square: preserve the whole photo with padding, or crop away part of the image.

Choose padding to keep the full image

Padding places the original image on a square canvas and fills the extra space around it. For a 300 × 490 photo, a square canvas that preserves the full image is 490 × 490, with 95 pixels of extra width on each side when centered. Choose a background that suits the image or use transparency when the destination supports it.

Choose cropping when the subject fills the frame

Cropping trims the longer dimension to make a square. It can work well when the subject is centered and there is spare background around it. Check the preview carefully: cropping may cut off hair, hands, product edges or text.

Check the destination requirements

Some profile pictures and product catalogs crop images again when they display them. Leave breathing room around faces and important details, and check the image at the size people will actually see. A square image is not necessarily a 1:1 crop of the original.

Create the square version

Open the Square Image Maker, choose a fit or crop approach, preview the result and download a copy. The original file remains unchanged. For a smaller output, use the image compressor after checking that the dimensions still meet the destination requirements.
