Practical guide

JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF: which image format should you use?

· Replikhurt Tools

The right image format depends on what the image contains and where you plan to use it. A photo, a logo with transparency and a website thumbnail do not have the same needs.

Use JPG for photographs and broad compatibility

JPG is a practical choice for photos when you need a file that opens almost everywhere. It uses lossy compression, so repeated saves can reduce quality. It also cannot preserve transparent areas; transparent pixels become a solid background when exported as JPG.

Use PNG when transparency or sharp edges matter

PNG preserves sharp edges and transparency, which makes it useful for logos, interface graphics and screenshots. It can produce larger files than modern photo formats, so it is not automatically the best choice for every image.

Use WebP or AVIF for supported web delivery

WebP and AVIF can reduce file size while maintaining useful visual quality, but the right choice depends on the browsers, apps and publishing workflow you support. Keep an original copy before conversion: converting between lossy formats cannot restore detail that was already discarded.

Convert a copy and compare the result

Check dimensions, transparency and visual quality after export. For a quick format change, try the WebP to JPG converter, AVIF to JPG converter or PNG to WebP converter. These tools process files in your browser; supported input formats depend on your browser.
